Have you ever heard someone say, "It was about as much fun as getting a root canal?" Or, have you ever heard a room full of people cringe when someone announces they have to go to the dentist for a root canal procedure? If you've never had to get a root canal, is it one of the procedures you dread the most?
There is a long-standing public perception that a root canal is the most awful thing you'll ever have to endure in the dentist's office. Some of our dental patients in Turlock arrive for their root canal procedures in absolute fear, and then leave completely surprised after the procedure is over.
Here's the truth: telling people they need a root canal is usually more painful than the actual procedure.
Because of advancements in modern dentistry and anesthetics, root canals are about as uncomfortable as a routine cleaning. All you will feel is pressure, and that's about it. Many people believe that root canals cause great pain, when it's actually the exact opposite---they relieve pain.
What we tell our dental patients in Turlock, is that almost all root canal treatments that we do are absolutely painless and will most likely be boring for them. In fact, most patients fall asleep during treatment because they are so comfortable. Our staff does a great job at prioritizing their comfort and that's certainly part of it, but we tell our patients their tooth will fall asleep just like when having a filling done.
So, if you are ever scheduled for a root canal procedure with your dentist, don't fret. Relax, trust him or her, and get your oral health back on track. It will be over before you know it.
