Foods That Work to Boost Your Oral Health

The foods we eat affect our health in many different ways. Most dentists skip over diet during dental exams, but we try to bring it up with our patients at our Turlock dental practice. Our diet has an enormous impact on our overall wellbeing. When most people think about what they're going to eat next, they mainly consider the aesthetic effects of the foods they consume. They try to eat healthy so they don't gain too much weight, but there's so much more to consider before you go for your next snack.

What you eat has a major impact on your oral health too. For example, if your diet is high is sugar and happens to be acidic, you're going to be prone to way higher risks of tooth decay. There are also foods you can eat that help you improve your oral health by giving you the necessary nutrients your body uses to build healthy teeth, fight infections, and keep your cells healthy.

Fruits and Vegetables Are Great For Your Oral Health!

Everyone has gotten a lecture from their mother to eat their fruits and vegetables at one time or another. I'd like to confirm what she was saying all along. Fruits and vegetables are not only great for keeping your body trim and healthy, they're also great for keeping your smile healthy. Here are a few that I recommend adding to your diet:

  • Carrots: Most people already know that carrots are great for your eyes, but they're also great for your teeth. Carrots contain a healthy dose of vitamins A and K. These vitamins are important for building healthy tooth enamel. Additionally, vitamin K has been shown to help the body draw calcium into the teeth by aiding in the production of a protein called osteocalcin.
  • Celery: Celery, like a carrot, is a crisp vegetable when consumed raw. Crisp vegetables have an abrasive property that helps clean the surface of your teeth when you eat them. Celery is also very fibrous. Fibrous foods tend to take longer to chew and swallow, which increases the production of saliva in your mouth. Saliva is essential for good oral health for a number of reasons.
  • Spinach: The majority of people in America are calcium deficient. A large number of people in our country are lactose intolerant and cannot consume milk, which further complicates this. For those of you not getting enough calcium in your diet, try adding more spinach to it. Pound for pound, spinach contains as much calcium as milk. Spinach is great in salads, on sandwiches, and sautéed.

Get Calcium From Other Sources Too!

  • Milk and Cheese: Most people are aware that dairy is beneficial to our diets because most dairy products are rich in calcium. It's worth emphasizing this group of foods, however, because without proper levels of calcium intake, your body will begin leeching the mineral from your teeth and bones. When the occurs, you are at higher risk of tooth decay and a range of health problems depending on your age.

We hope our blog helps you think about some celery with a little peanut butter the next time you reach for a snack. Your teeth and gums will thank you for choosing a carrot over a candy bar tomorrow on your break at work.
