How Are Braces Different Than Invisalign?

Jan 21 • 2 minute read

A kid smiles like a goof and has braces.

If you or someone in your family is in need of orthodontic care to correct a spacing or bite issue, you'll have to make the decision on what type of treatment will work best for the situation. For some issues, Invisalign® clear aligners work well as discrete, affordable solution. For other issues, especially more severe ones that may require longer treatment, traditional braces tend to work best. The decision will be one you and your dentist or orthodontist make based on the requirements of your treatment, specific goals, and most likely budget and insurance.

At our Turlock dental practice, we use Invisalign® and Invisalign® Teen for most orthodontic issues, but we will recommend braces if the situation necessitates them. When we're discussing the differences between the two options with our patients, these are some of the differences we regularly cite:

The Teeth Straightening Process Is Different: For traditional braces, small metal or ceramic brackets are bonded to each tooth, and then tightened and adjusted using a set of wires. Orthodontists are able to more precisely monitor and adjust the teeth straightening process using smaller or larger adjustments if they wish. Conversely, the treatment plan for Invisalign® is laid out based on a series of aligners that are swapped out periodically. Both will provide wonderful benefits, but an orthodontist may have slightly more control the overall process with braces.

The Possibility of  User Error Is Different: Once traditional braces have been applied, they're permanent until the end of treatment. As long as your orthodontist is making regular adjustments and you practice a proper hygiene routine, there isn't much you can do to throw off the treatment plan. Invisalign®, however, relies a bit on your acceptance of wearing the aligners for the recommended amount of time. We tell our Invisalign® patients in Turlock that it's extremely important to follow our recommendations so that proper pressure is applied and the teeth are gradually moved to their optimal position.

The Aesthetics Are Different: Many adults choose Invisalign® over traditional braces because they don't want to expose brackets and wires when they smile. One of the greatest advantages of the Invisalign® clear aligner system is that most people won't even be able to tell you're wearing it. It may seem superficial or unimportant, but aesthetics are a big consideration when you'll be wearing something for months.
