This post is especially dedicated to those of you out there trying to kick the habit as part of your New Year's resolution. Although we respect an adult's right to use tobacco, we abhor the habit. If you've seen a doctor, well, ever, then you know what they'll say about your smoking or chewing tobacco habit. As dentists, we get to deal with many of the effects of tobacco first-hand, which is why we're dedicating this short, easy-to-read post to giving you 10 of our best reasons not to smoke:

  1. Tobacco use is a leading cause of gum disease.
  2. Tobacco is a known cause of tooth discoloration.
  3. Tobacco use can complicate dental implant procedures.
  4. Oral cancer risk skyrockets when you use tobacco.
  5. Smoking and chewing tobacco greatly increase instances of tooth decay.
  6. Tobacco increases your risk for leukoplakia. Leukoplakia are small white precancerous lesions that could develop into oral cancer.
  7. Tobacco use causes bad breath.
  8. Tobacco users develop more calculus, which leads to greater instances of tooth decay and gum disease.
  9. Tobacco can stain your tongue.
  10. Using tobacco increases the risk your children will use tobacco for behavioral and social reasons. Keep your kids healthy by quitting or abstaining from tobacco.

Thanks for Reading!

Best of luck on quitting tobacco, and try to share it with your dentist if you are. Ask him or her for encouragement and any advice they might give. Quitting smoking or chewing tobacco is one of the best decisions you'll ever make for yourself. It's an investment in every sense of the word.
