It's that time of year when the flowers bloom, allergies flare, and the world is bathed in sunshine from longer days just before summer. Spring is upon us!
Many of you will roll up your sleeves and dedicate some time to the old tradition of spring cleaning this year, but don't forget to also give your oral health a cleaning. Your New Year's resolution might've slipped a month or two ago, but here's a wonderful secret: each day is a new opportunity to turn it all around. This spring, reclaim your oral health with these three suggestions:
It's time to schedule that dentist appointment.
If you have been to the dentist in the last three to six months, this spring cleaning suggestion isn't for you. Good job by the way! If you've purposely avoided the dentist or just haven't found the time to make an appointment, this is a friendly nudge to do so. The changing of the season is as good a reason as any to practice a little self-care.
Commit to using floss at least once a day for the next 30 days.
There are a lot of reasons people don't regularly use floss. A big part of it is because they do it a few times and mean to keep doing it, but fail to let it develop into a habit. As a result, the floss sits unused in the drawer as plaque buildup and periodontal disease set in.
This spring we want you to do something different:
Give yourself a 30-day challenge to use floss at least once a day. Some studies have determined that it takes about three weeks for you to develop a habit and make a behavior more automatic. If you commit to flossing for 30 days, maybe it will up your chances just a bit to make flossing a regular part of your routine. Enjoy the better breath, healthier gums, and cleaner teeth as a result!
Upgrade your toothbrush.
If you buy a new appliance you use every day or a new car that you'll drive every day, you're usually comfortable spending a little extra since it's an item you use every day. What about your toothbrush?
Do yourself a favor this spring and allocate a little extra money to buying a brush that's best suited for your mouth. Talk to you dentist and ask what he or she recommends based on your conditions. Look for some reviews and information about toothbrushes online and select one that will help you clean more tooth surface and keep your mouth healthy.
