Happy Halloween: 10 Quick Facts for You Trick-or-Treaters

Oct 11 • 1 minute read

Girl dressed as a witch trick or treating.

It's the spookiest time of the year again! Jack-o-lanterns, skeletons, and the occasional robotic crypt keeper are starting to become familiar sights around the neighborhood. Halloween is right around the corner, and that means kids everywhere are gearing up to trick-or-treat and get all the sweets.

We'll spare the typical dentist browbeating this witching season and instead share some of the most interesting facts we could conjure up about the great tradition of celebrating the spooky:

  1. Collectively, the only other holiday Americans spend more to celebrate is Christmas. Annually, Americans spend $6 billion on Halloween candy, costumes, and decorations.
  2. According to the National Retail Federation, more than 171 million Americans celebrate Halloween.
  3. Halloween was brought to America by the Irish and Scottish in the 19th century.
  4. Halloween has been celebrated in various forms for more than 2,000 years.
  5. When Halloween was first brought to America, pumpkins weren't commonly found. As a result, the first Jack-o-lanterns were usually carved turnips.
  6. Some dentists recommend dark chocolate as a healthier candy to hand out to trick-or-treaters because it typically has less sugar than other candies.
  7. Approximately 20 million pounds of candy corn gets sold for Halloween.
  8. According to USA Today, the most popular Halloween candy in California is Lifesavers.
  9. Tootsie Rolls have been included in soldier's rations since World War II.
  10. When you're picking out your pumpkin to carve, pay attention to the stem. It's a good indicator of how fresh the pumpkin is.

Thanks for Reading!

Be safe out there this Halloween, and practice some moderation with your kids' sugar intake. Encourage good brushing and flossing habits to help lower the risk of tooth decay.
