Invisalign® uses a clear aligner system to straighten teeth safely, effectively, and discreetly over time. It’s one of the most popular clear aligner systems on the market today with more than 10 million people treated, and it even has a great option for younger patients. Invisalign Teen® has helped build greater confidence for more than 1.4 million teens by bringing out their smile’s natural beauty.
If you’re one of the many who loves showing off their new Invisalign® smile, we’re going to share some of the tips we give to all our new Invisalign® patients to get the most out of their treatment. If you’re not an Invisalign® patient, this post may give you a better sense of what to expect if you decide to try it.
If you’re curious what your smile might look like if you tried Invisalign®, follow these instructions to see a preview:
Wear Your Aligners for 20-22 Hours a Day
One of the best things about Invisalign® clear aligners is that you can take them off if you need to. This is one of the many reasons people opt for a clear aligner system over braces if given the choice. It’s totally OK to remove your aligners for a limited time if you have a special occasion or when you eat. Just make sure you’re wearing them 20-22 hours each day for the best results.
How Often You Should Brush with Invisalign®
It’s important to maintain your normal oral hygiene routine while working through an Invisalign® treatment plan. You’ll want to brush your teeth at least twice a day, but we actually encourage our patients to try and brush after meals and snacks if possible, so food particles don’t get trapped between the aligners and the surface of your teeth.
Don’t Forget to Clean Your Aligners
Cleaning your aligners, like your teeth, is also essential if you’re working through an Invisalign® treatment. If you don’t clean them regularly, they can stain and also develop a bad smell. Your dentist can recommend a cleaning routine and possibly some cleaning products you can use if you’re on-the-go.
Be Careful When Cleaning Your Aligners
Follow your dentist’s recommendations for keeping your aligners clean. Don’t soak them in harsh chemicals or rinse them with mouthwash. You also want to soak them in warm water and avoid soaking them in hot water. Invisalign® clear aligners are durable, but they can become warped or damaged if cleaned or handled improperly.
Keep Your Last Set of Aligners
You’ll use Invisalign® to gradually shift your teeth into position by changing out your custom-fitted aligners every couple of weeks. When it’s time to swap the old for a new set, don’t get rid of the previous set of aligners. You can use these to keep your teeth firmly in place while you wait for a replacement if you break or lose your current set of Invisalign® aligners.
