It’s tough to call any traditional Halloween treat “good” for your teeth—other than a non-candied apple or popcorn not rolled into a sticky ball—but there are some that are certainly better than others.
Remember that a great dental hygiene routine and moderation are key to mitigating tooth decay this Halloween. Before trick or treating, share some of these tips with your family to encourage some healthier choices as they work through their candy haul.
Hard Candies vs. Gummy Candies
Gummy candy and hard candy offer distinct textures and flavors, each with its own set of considerations. Hard candies like sugar-free mints or candies dissolve slowly in the mouth, reducing the time sugar is in contact with your teeth. However, their crunchiness can also pose a risk of chipping or cracking teeth if bitten down upon too hard. Gummy candies can be problematic for dental health as they tend to stick to teeth, making it easier for sugar to linger and promote bacterial growth, potentially leading to cavities. Be Cautious with Sour Candies
Halloween sour candies are often highly acidic, which can harm tooth enamel.
