If you hit all the right neighborhoods with your kids, you're going to end up with an abundance of sugary sweets at the end of this month. Dentists are quick to warn about the dangers of tooth decay and gum disease around this spooky holiday, but all the different kinds of candy are not equally bad for your teeth. Some types of candy make a better choice for those most concerned about their oral health. Here’s a breakdown of three of the best and worst Halloween candies for your teeth.

Best Halloween Candy for Your Teeth

These treats can still damage your oral health, but they're a better choice than other candy when enjoyed in moderation.

Chocolate (Especially Dark Chocolate)

Why it’s better: Chocolate is a safer option for your teeth compared to many other candies. It dissolves quickly, reducing the time sugar sticks to your teeth. Dark chocolate is even better, as it contains less sugar and has a few compounds that may offer oral health benefits. Plus, chocolate is easy to clean off your teeth compared to something like gummy worms.

Tip: Avoid chocolate candy with sticky fillings like caramel or nougat.

Sugar-Free Gum

Why it’s better: Sugar-free gum helps protect your teeth by increasing saliva production, which is one of your best oral health defenses. Saliva naturally washes away food particles and neutralizes acid. Many sugar-free gums contain xylitol, which can also reduce harmful bacteria in your mouth.

Tip: Chew sugar-free gum after eating Halloween treats to reduce sugar’s impact on your teeth.

Peanut Butter Cups

Why it’s better: Peanut butter cups, especially those with dark chocolate, are easier on your teeth compared to sticky candy like gummy bears. Peanuts also add a bit of protein to your treat.

Tip: Choose dark chocolate peanut butter cups for less sugar and extra health benefits.

Worst Halloween Candy for Your Teeth

You'll likely get a few of these treats in your family's Halloween haul this year. You can reduce the risk they pose to your oral health by avoiding them in favor of better choices, following good oral health routines, and rinsing your mouth after you eat one.

Sticky Candies (Caramel, Taffy, Gummy Bears)

Why they're bad: Sticky candy clings to your teeth and gums and gets stuck in tiny crevices. The longer sugar sticks around, the more likely it is to lead to decay. Caramel and gummy bears are particularly notorious for this.

Tip: If you indulge, brush your teeth soon after to remove any lingering sugar.

Sour Candy

Why it’s bad: Sour candy is a double dose of sugar and acid. Acid, such as citric acid, weakens your enamel, making your teeth vulnerable to cavities.

Tip: Rinse your mouth with water after eating sour candy, and wait at least 30 minutes before brushing to avoid enamel damage.

Hard Candy (Lollipops, Jolly Ranchers)

Why it’s bad: Hard candies take a long time to dissolve, meaning your teeth are exposed to sugar for longer periods. Biting into them can also chip or crack your teeth, sometimes causing more serious dental issues. Be especially aware of this risk if you've had dental work done on cracks and chips in your teeth in the past.

Tip: Let hard candies dissolve completely and avoid biting into them.

Stay safe and have a great time this Halloween. Just remember to be a little mindful of your dental health when you break into your candy stash. Try to choose less harmful choices to enjoy and follow best practices to reduce your risk of decay and tooth damage.
