Undergoing a dental procedure can be a disruptive experience, whether it’s a wisdom tooth extraction, crown placement, or something more involved like a dental implant. After nearly any dental procedure, there's some type of recovery process you'll want to follow and it may take some adjustments to your normal routine. Taking the right steps and following your dentist's instructions can make the healing process smoother and more efficient. Here's six tips to follow that apply after nearly any dental procedure:

Follow Post-Op Instructions Carefully

Your dentist will provide you with specific post-operative instructions based on the procedure you've had done. It's important to share your prescription medications with your dentist to ensure their advice on medication, diet, oral hygiene, and activity levels are specific to your needs. Make sure you fully understand the instructions before leaving the dental office, know how you can get in touch with your dentist if you have any questions or concerns.

Rest and Take It Easy

It’s essential to give your body time to heal after a dental procedure. Avoid strenuous activities for as long as your dentist recommends. Activities like heavy lifting, bending over, or rigorous exercise can increase blood flow to areas that are healing, leading to swelling or bleeding. Instead, use this time to rest and relax, allowing your body to focus on healing.

Manage Pain and Swelling

Your dentist may recommend over-the-counter pain relievers like ibuprofen or acetaminophen to help with discomfort. An ice pack can also be applied for 15-20 minutes to reduce swelling and pain. If your pain seems severe or lasts longer than expected, contact your dentist to ensure everything is healing properly.

Be Mindful of What You Eat and Drink

After a dental procedure, it’s important to be cautious about what you eat or drink. In general, avoid hot, spicy, or acidic foods. Also, steer clear of hard, crunchy, or sticky foods that could disturb the healing area or get lodged in your teeth. Drinking plenty of water is vital, but avoid using be mindful of straws if you've had surgery. Sucking on a straw can dislodge blood clots, for example, leading to a painful condition known as dry socket if you've had wisdom teeth removed.

Keep Your Mouth Clean, But Gently

Even if you've had surgery, it's important to keep up a consistent oral hygiene routine. If there are any adjustments to your normal brushing and flossing, your dentist will cover what to do. Brush your teeth carefully to prevent irritation. Be cautious not to spit forcefully, as this could disturb the healing process.

Avoid Tobacco and Alcohol

Smoking, smokeless tobacco, and alcohol can slow down healing after dental procedures. Smoking reduces blood flow to the gums and increases the risk of infection. Alcohol can also have serious interactions with certain prescription medications.
